JOSEPHA
-
Mary art thou the little maidB
Who plucked me flowers in SpringC
I know thee not I feel afraidB
Thou'rt strange this eveningC
-
A sweet and rustic girl I wonD
What time the woods were greenE
No woman with deep eyes that shoneF
And the pale brows of a QueenE
-
MARY inattentive to his wordsG
-
A stranger came with feet of flameH
And told me this strange thingC
For all I was a village maidB
My son should be a KingC
-
JOSEPHA
-
A King dear wife Who ever knewI
Of Kings in stables bornJ
-
MARYK
-
Do you hear in the dark and starlit blueI
The clarion and the hornJ
-
JOSEPHA
-
Mary alas lest grief and joyL
Have sent thy wits astrayM
But let me look on this my boyL
And take the wraps awayM
-
MARYK
-
Behold the ladN
-
JOSEPHA
-
I dare not gazeO
Light streams from every limbP
-
MARYK
-
The winter sun has stored his raysO
And passed the fire to himP
-
Look Eastward look I hear a soundQ
O Joseph what do you seeK
-
JOSEPHA
-
The snow lies quiet on the groundQ
And glistens on the treeK
-
The sky is bright with a star's great lightR
And clearly I beholdS
Three Kings descending yonder hillT
Whose crowns are crowns of goldS
-
O Mary what do you hear and seeK
With your brow toward the WestU
-
MARYK
-
The snow lies glistening on the treeK
And silent on Earth's breastU
-
And strong and tall with lifted eyesV
Seven shepherds walk this wayM
And angels breaking from the skiesV
Dance and sing hymns and prayM
-
JOSEPHA
-
-
I wonder much at these bright KingsW
The shepherds I despiseV
-
MARYK
-
You know not what a shepherd singsW
Nor see his shining eyesV
