from Leconte de LisleA
-
-
Night on the bloodstained snow the wind is chillB
And there a thousand tombless warriors lieC
Grasping their swords wild featured All are stillB
Above them the black ravens wheel and cryC
-
A brilliant moon sends her cold light abroadD
Hialmar arises from the reddened slainE
Heavily leaning on his broken swordF
And bleeding from his side the battle rainE
-
Hail to you all is there one breath still drawnG
Among those fierce and fearless lads who playedH
So merrily and sang as sweet in the dawnG
As thrushes singing in the bramble shadeH
-
They have no word to say my helm's unboundI
My breastplate by the axe unrivetedI
Blood's on my eyes I hear a spreading soundI
Like waves or wolves that clamour in my headI
-
Eater of men old raven come this wayJ
And with thine iron bill open my breastI
To morrow find us where we lie to dayJ
And bear my heart to her that I love bestI
-
Through Upsala where drink the Jarls and singK
And clash their golden bowls in companyL
Bird of the moor carry on tireless wingK
To Ylmer's daughter there the heart of meL
-
And thou shalt see her standing straight and paleM
High pedestalled on some rook haunted towerN
She has two earrings silver and vermeilM
And eyes like stars that shine in sunset hourN
-
Tell her my love thou dark bird ominousO
Give her my heart no bloodless heart and vileM
But red compact and strong O raven ThusO
Shall Ylmer's daughter greet thee with a smileM
-
Now let my life from twenty deep wounds flowM
And wolves may drink the blood My time is doneP
Young brave and spotless I rejoice to goM
And sit where all the Gods are in the sunP
