Of pearies and their origin I singA
How at the first great Jove the lord of airB
Impelled the planets round the central sunC
Each circling within each until at lastD
The winged Mercury moves in molten fireE
And which of you ye heavenly deitiesF
That hear the endless music of the spheresG
Hast given to man the secret of the TopH
Say was it thou O Fun that dost preferE
Before all temples liberty and playI
Yes yes twas only thou thou from the firstJ
Wast present when the Roman children cameK
To the smooth pavement where with heavy lashL
They chased the wooden plaything without endM
But not to tell of these is now my taskN
Nor yet of humming tops whose lengthened neckO
With packthread bound and handle placed aboveP
Amuses little children Not of theseF
But of the pearie chief of all his tribeQ
Do I now sing He with a sudden boundR
From out his station in the player s handS
Descends like Maia s son on one foot poisedT
And utters gentle music circling roundR
Till in the centre of the ring it sleepsU
When lo as in the bright blue vault of heavenC
A falcon towering in his pride of placeV
Perceives from far a partridge on the wingA
And stoops to seize him even so comes downW
Another pearie and as when the swordX
Of faithful Abdiel struck the apostate s crestY
And sent him reeling back ten paces hugeZ
So reeled the former pearie nor can standS
The latter s iron peg and more come downW
Innumerable hosts of pearies armedA2
With dire destructive steel The players shoutB2
It is the shout of battle the loud cryC2
Of victors rushing to the spoil the wailD2
Of ruined boys their pearie split and allE2
All lostF2
Thus wags this ever changing worldG2
And we may morals from the pearie drawH2
