In the buds before they burstA
Leaves and flowers are mouldedA
Closely pressed they lie at firstA
Exquisitely foldedA
-
Though no hope of change they feltA
Folded hard togetherB
Soon their sap begins to meltA
In the warmer weatherB
-
Till when Life returns with SpringC
Through them softly stealingC
All their freshness forth they flingC
Hidden forms revealingC
-
Who can fold those flowers againD
In the way he found themE
Or those spreading leaves restrainF
In the buds that bound themE
-
Trust me Spring is very nearG
All the buds are swellingC
All the glory of the yearG
In those buds is dwellingC
-
What the opened buds revealH
Tells us Life is flowingC
What the buds still shut concealH
We shall end in knowingC
-
Long I lingered in the budA
Doubting of the seasonI
Winter's cold had chilled my bloodA
I was ripe for treasonI
-
Now no more I doubt or waitA
All my fears are vanishedA
Summer s coming dear though lateA
Fogs and frosts are banishedA
