In the dense entangled streetA
Where the web of Trade is weavingB
Forms unknown in crowds I meetA
Much of each and all believingB
Each his small designs achievingB
Hurries on with restless feetA
While through Fancy s power deceivingB
Self in every form I greetA
-
Oft in yonder rocky dellC
Neath the birches shadow seatedD
I have watched the darksome wellC
Where my stooping form repeatedE
Now advanced and now retreatedD
With the spring s alternate swellC
Till destroyed before completedD
As the big drops grew and fellC
-
By the hollow mountain sideF
Questions strange I shout for everG
While the echoes far and wideF
Seem to mock my vain endeavourG
Still I shout for though they neverG
Cast my borrowed voice asideF
Words from empty words they severG
Words of Truth from words of PrideF
-
Yes the faces in the crowdH
And the wakened echoes glancingB
From the mountain rocky browedH
And the lights in water dancingB
Each my wandering sense entrancingB
Tells me back my thoughts aloudH
All the joys of Truth enhancingB
Crushing all that makes me proudH
