O my land O my loveA
What a woe and how deepB
Is thy death to my long mourning soulC
God alone God aboveA
Can awake thee from sleepB
Can release thee from bondage and doleC
Alas alas and alasD
For the once proud people of BanbaE
-
As a tree in its primeF
Which the axe layeth lowG
Didst thou fall O unfortunate landH
Not by time nor thy crimeF
Came the shock and the blowG
They were given by a false felon handH
Alas alas and alasD
For the once proud people of BanbaE
-
O my grief of all griefsD
Is to see how thy throneI
Is usurped whilst thyself art in thrallJ
Other lands have their chiefsD
Have their kings thou aloneI
Art a wife yet a widow withalJ
Alas alas and alasD
For the once proud people of BanbaE
-
The high house of O'NeillJ
Is gone down to the dustK
The O'Brien is clanless and bannedH
And the steel the red steelJ
May no more be the trustK
Of the Faithful and Brave in the landH
Alas alas and alasD
For the once proud people of BanbaE
-
True alas Wrong and WrathL
Were of old all too rifeM
Deeds were done which no good man admiresD
And perchance Heaven hathL
Chastened us for the strifeM
And the blood shedding ways of our siresD
Alas alas and alasD
For the once proud people of BanbaE
-
But no more This our doomN
While our hearts yet are warmO
Let us not over weakly deploreP
For the hour soon may loomN
When the Lord's mighty handH
Shall be raised for our rescue once moreP
And all our grief shall be turned into joyQ
For the still proud people of BanbaE
