Summer Studies. Iii Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABABCC DEDEFF GHGHIJ KLKLMM NDNDOO

That solitary cloud grows dark and wideA
While distant thunder rumbles in the airB
A fitful ripple breaks the river's tideA
The lazy cattle are no longer thereB
But homeward come in long procession slowC
With many a bleat and many a plaintive lowC
-
Darker and wider spreading o'er the westD
Advancing clouds each in fantastic formE
And mirror'd turrets on the river's breastD
Tell in advance the coming of a stormE
Closer and brighter glares the lightning's flashF
And louder nearer sounds the thunder's crashF
-
The air of evening is intensely hotG
The breeze feels heated as it fans my browsH
Now sullen rain drops patter down like shotG
Strike in the grass or rattle 'mid the boughsH
A sultry lull and then a gust againI
And now I see the thick advancing rainJ
-
It fairly hisses as it comes alongK
And where it strikes bounds up again in sprayL
As if 'twere dancing to the fitful songK
Made by the trees which twist themselves and swayL
In contest with the wind which rises fastM
Until the breeze becomes a furious blastM
-
And now the sudden fitful storm has fledN
The clouds lie pil'd up in the splendid westD
In massive shadow tipp'd with purplish redN
Crimson or gold The scene is one of restD
And on the bosom of yon still lagoonO
I see the crescent of the pallid moonO
