A fitful ripple breaks the river's tide | A |
The lazy cattle are no longer there | B |
But homeward come in long procession slow | C |
With many a bleat and many a plaintive low | C |

Advancing clouds each in fantastic form | E |
And mirror'd turrets on the river's breast | D |
Tell in advance the coming of a storm | E |
Closer and brighter glares the lightning's flash | F |
And louder nearer sounds the thunder's crash | F |

The air of evening is intensely hot | G |
The breeze feels heated as it fans my brows | H |
Now sullen rain drops patter down like shot | G |
Strike in the grass or rattle 'mid the boughs | H |
A sultry lull and then a gust again | I |
And now I see the thick advancing rain | J |

It fairly hisses as it comes along | K |
And where it strikes bounds up again in spray | L |
As if 'twere dancing to the fitful song | K |
Made by the trees which twist themselves and sway | L |
In contest with the wind which rises fast | M |
Until the breeze becomes a furious blast | M |

And now the sudden fitful storm has fled | N |
The clouds lie pil'd up in the splendid west | D |
In massive shadow tipp'd with purplish red | N |
Crimson or gold The scene is one of rest | D |
And on the bosom of yon still lagoon | O |
I see the crescent of the pallid moon | O |
