Indolence. [1] Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDDAA EEFFGG

I turn aside and in the pause might startA
As Mem'ry's elbow leans upon Time's ChartA
Which shows alas how soon all men must glideB
Over meridians on life's ocean tideB
Meridians showing how both youth and sageC
Are sailing northward to the zone of ageC
On to an atmosphere of gloom I wistD
Where mariners are lost in melancholy mistD
But gayer thoughts like spring tide swallows dartA
Through youth's brave mind and animate its heartA
-
-
But Indolence is seen a pallid RuthE
A timid gleaner in the fields of youthE
A wretched gath'rer of the scattered grainF
Left by the reapers who have swept the plainF
But with no Boaz standing by the whileG
To watch its figure with approving smileG
