Then sweeping down below Virginia's CapesA
From Chesapeake to where Savannah flowsB
We find the settlers laughing 'mid their grapesA
And ignorant of snowsB
-
The fragrant uppowock and golden cornC
Spread far a field by river and lagoonD
And all the months poured out from Plenty's HornC
Were opulent as JuneD
-
Yet they had tragedies all dark and fellE
Lone Roanoke Island rises on the viewF
And this Peninsula its tale could tellE
Of OpecancanoughF
-
But when the Ocean thunders on the shoreG
Its waves though broken overflow the beachH
So here our Fathers on and onward boreG
With English laws and speechH
-
Kind skies above them underfoot rich soilsI
Silence and Savage at their presence fledJ
This Giant's Causeway sacred through their toilsI
Resounded at their treadJ
-
With ardent hearts and ever open handsK
Candid and honest brave and proud they grewF
Their lives and habits colored by fair landsK
As skies give waters hueF
-
The race in semi Feudal State appearsL
Their Knightly figures glow in tender mistM
With ghostly pennons flung from ghostly spearsL
And ghostly hawks on wristM
-
By enterprise and high adventure stirredN
From rude lunette and sentry guarded croftO
They hawked at Empire and as on they spurredN
Fate's falcon soared aloftO
-
Fate's falcon soared aloft full strong and freeP
With blood on talons plumage beak and breastQ
Her shadow like a storm shade on the seaP
Far sailing down the WestQ
-
Swift hoofs clang out behind that Falcon's flightsR
Hoofs shod with Golden Horse Shoes catch the eyeS
And as they ring we see the Forest KnightsR
The Cavaliers ride byS
