Arms And The Man. - The Lines Around Yorktown Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDED FGFG HIHI JKJK LMLM NONO PQPQ

Troops late by Williamsburg's brave palace wallsA
With trump and drum had marched down Glo'ster streetB
And some with throb of oars and loud sea callsA
Had landed from the fleetB
-
And well our leader had befooled his foesC
Left them like archers blundering in the darkD
To draw against the empty space their bowsE
While here was their true markD
-
Brave Lincoln on the right with kindling eyeF
Smiles 'mid the cares of grave command immersedG
To see dramatic retribution nighF
And Charleston's fate reversedG
-
The Light Troops stood upon the curved right flankH
New Hampshire Massachusetts Bay were thereI
Connecticut marched with them rank on rankH
And gallant DelawareI
-
There too Virginia's sturdy yeomen stoodJ
Led on by Nelson of the open handK
As thick and stubborn as a living woodJ
In some enchanted landK
-
Next came the steady Continental LineL
Rhode Island and New Jersey breast to breastM
Ready to tread the hot and smoking wineL
From War's red clusters pressedM
-
New York and Pennsylvania on these plainsN
Closed boldly in on the embattled townO
Nor feared they threatened penalties and painsN
Of Parliament or CrownO
-
And Maryland the gay and gallant cameP
As always ready for the battle's bruntQ
And here again Virginia faced the flameP
Along the deadly frontQ
