He that giveth to the poor lendeth to the LordA
-
The night wind comes in sudden squallsB
The ruddy fire light starts and fallsB
Fantastically on the wallsB
-
The bare trees all their branches waveC
The frantic wind doth howl and raveC
Like prairie wolf above a graveC
-
The moon looks out but cold and paleD
And seeming scar'd at this wild galeD
Draws o'er her pallid face a veilD
-
In vain I turn the poet's pageE
In vain consult some ancient sageE
I hear alone the tempest rageE
-
The shutters tug at hinge and barF
The windows clash with frosty jarF
The child creeps closer to PapaG
-
And now I almost start aghastH
The clamor rises thick and fastH
Surely a troop of fiends drove pastH
-
That last shock shook the oaken doorI
Sounding like billows on the shoreI
On such a night God shield the poorJ
-
God shield the poor to night who stayK
In piteous homes who if they prayK
Ask thee oh God for bread and dayK
-
Think think ye men who daily wearL
Purple and linen ye whose hairL
Flings perfume on the temper'd airL
-
Think think I say aye start and thinkM
That many tremble on death's brinkM
Dying for want of meat and drinkM
-
When tatter'd poor folk meet your eyesN
Think friend like Christian in this wiseN
Each one is Christ hid in disguiseN
-
Then when you hear the tempest's roarI
That thunders at your carv d doorI
Know that it knocketh for the poorJ
