| for food that's been around awhile | C |
| we keep it just in case | B |
| 'It's probably too old to eat ' | D |
| my mother likes to say | E |
| 'But I don't think it's old enough | F |
| for me to throw away ' | D |

| It stays there for a month or more | G |
| to ripen in the cold | H |
| and soon we notice fuzzy clumps | I |
| of multicolored mold | H |
| The clumps are larger every day | E |
| we notice this as well | J |
| but mostly what we notice | K |
| is a certain special smell | J |

| When finally it all becomes | L |
| a nasty mass of slime | M |
| my mother takes it out and says | N |
| 'Apparently it's time ' | - |
| She dumps it in the garbage can | O |
| though not without regret | P |
| then fills the space with other food | Q |
| that's not so ancient yet | P |
