When yellow lock'd and crystal ey'dA
I dream'd green woods amongB
Where tall trees wav'd from side to sideA
And in their green breasts deep and wideA
I saw the building blue jay hideA
O then the earth was youngB
-
The winds were fresh and brave and boldC
The red sun round and strongD
No prophet voice chill loud and coldC
Across my woodland dreamings roll'dC
The green earth waxeth sere and oldC
That once was fair and youngB
-
I saw in scarr'd and knotty boleE
The fresh'ning of the sapF
When timid spring gave first small doleE
Of sunbeams thro' bare boughs that stoleE
I saw the bright'ning blossoms rollE
From summer's high pil'd lapF
-
And where an ancient oak tree layG
The forest stream acrossH
I mus'd above the sweet shrill sprayG
I watch'd the speckl'd trout at playG
I saw the shadows dance and swayG
On ripple and on mossH
-
I pull'd the chestnut branches lowI
As o'er the stream they hungB
To see their bursting buds of snowI
I heard the sweet spring waters flowI
My heart and I we did not knowI
But that the earth was youngB
-
I joy'd in solemn woods to seeJ
Where sudden sunbeams clungB
On open space of mossy leaJ
The violet and anemoneK
Wave their frail heads and beckon meJ
Sure then the earth was youngB
-
I heard the fresh wild breezes birrL
New budded boughs amongB
I saw the deeper tinting stirL
In the green tassels of the firL
I heard the pheasant rise and whirrL
Above her callow youngB
-
I saw the tall fresh ferns prestM
By scudding doe and fawnN
I say the grey dove's swelling breastM
Above the margin of her nestM
When north and south and east and westM
Roll'd all the red of dawnN
-
At eventide at length I layG
On grassy pillow flungB
I saw the parting bark of dayG
With crimson sails and shrouds all gayG
With golden fires drift awayG
The billowy clouds amongB
-
I saw the stately planets sailO
On that blue ocean wideA
I saw blown by some mystic galeO
Like silver ship in elfin taleO
That bore some damsel rare and paleO
The moon's slim crescent glideA
-
And ev'ry throb of springP
The rust'ling boughs amongB
That filled the silver vein of brookQ
That lit with bloom the mossy nookQ
Cried to my boyish bosom LookQ
How fresh the earth and youngB
-
The winds were fresh the days as clearL
As crystals set in goldC
No shape with prophet mantle drearL
Thro' those old woods came drifting nearL
To whisper in my wond'ring earL
The green earth waxeth oldC
