He saved his soul and saved his porkA
With old time preservationB
He did not hold with creosoteC
Or new plans of salvationB
He said that Works would show the manD
The smoke house tell upon the hamE
-
He didn't when he sunk a wellF
Inspect the stuns and gravelG
To prove that Moses was a dunceH
Unfit for furrin travelG
He marvell'd at them works of GodI
An' broke 'em up to mend the roadJ
-
And when the Circus come aroundK
He hitch'd his sleek old horsesH
And in his rattling wagon tookL
His dimpl'd household forcesH
The boys to wonder at the ClownM
And think his fate Life's highest crownM
-
He wondered at the zebras wildN
Nor knew 'em painted donkeysH
An' when he gave the boys a dimeO
For cakes to feed the monkeysH
He never thought in any shapeP
He had descended from an apeP
-
And when he saw some shallow pateQ
With smallest brain possessionB
He uttered no filosofyR
On Nature's retrogressionB
To ancient types by Darwin's ruleS
He simply said Wal darn a foolS
-
He never had an enemyT
But once a year to meetin'B
When he and Deacon Maybee foughtU
On questions of free seatin'B
Or which should be the one t' rebukeV
Pastor for kissin' sister LukeV
-
His farm was well enough but stonesH
Kind of stern ruthless facts isH
An' he jest made out to save a miteW
An' pay his righteous taxesH
An' mebbe tote some flour an' porkA
To poor old critters past their workX
-
But on the neatest thing he hedW
Around the place or dwellin'B
I guess he never paid a redW
Of taxes No mush melonB
Was rounder sweeter pinker thanB
The old Man's daughter Minta AnnB
-
I've been at Philadelfy's showY
An' other similar fussesH
An' seen a mighty sight of stoneB
Minarveys and VenussesH
An' Sikeys clad in flowers an' wingsH
But not much show of factory thingsH
-
I've seen the hull entire crowdW
Of Jove's female relationsH
An' I feel to make a solemn swearZ
On them thar LamentationsH
That as a sort of general planB
I'd rather spark with Minta AnnB
-
You'd ought to see her dimpled chinB
With one red freckle on itW
Her brown eyes glancing underneathA2
Her tilted shaker bonnetW
I vow I often did desireB2
They'd set the plaguey thing a fireB2
-
You'd ought to hear that gal singC2
On Sabbath up to meetin'B
You'd kind of feel high lifted upD2
Your soul for Heaven fleetin'B
And then came supper down she'd tieW
You to this earth with pumpkin pieW
-
I tell you stranger 'twas a sightW
For poetry and speechesH
To see her sittin' on the stoopE2
A peelin' scarlet peachesH
Inter the kettle at her feetW
I tell you 'twas a show completeW
-
Drip droppin' thro' the rustlin' vineB
The sunbeams came a flittin'B
An' sort of danced upon the floorF2
Chas'd by the tabby kittenB
Losh to see the critter's big surpriseH
When them beams slipped into Minta's eyesH
-
An' down her brow her pretty hairZ
Cum curlin' crinklin' creepin'B
In leetle yaller mites of ringsH
Inter them bright eyes peepin'B
Es run the tendrils of the vineB
To whar the merry sunbeams shineB
-
But losh her smile was dreadful shyW
An' kept her white lids underB2
Jest as when darkens up the skyW
An' growls away the thunderB2
Them skeery speckled trout will hideW
Beneath them white pond lilies' prideW
-
An' then her heart 'twas made clar throughG2
Of Californy metalG
Chock full of things es sugar sweetW
Es a presarvin' kettleG
The beaux went crazed fur menny a mileH2
When I got thet kettle on the bileH2
-
The good old deacon's gone to wharG2
Thar ain't no wild contentionsH
On Buildin' Funds' Committees andW
No taxes nor exemptionsH
Yet still I sort of feel he preachesH
And Minta Ann preserves my peachesH
