Come with me said the WindA
To the ship within the dockB
Or dost thou fear the shockB
Of the ocean hidden rockB
When tempests strike thee full and leave thee blindA
And low the inky cloudsC
Blackly tangle in thy shroudsC
And ev'ry strained cordD
Finds a voice and shrills a wordE
That word of doom so thunderously upflungB
From the tongueB
Of every forked waveF
Lamenting o'er a graveF
Deep hidden at its baseG
Where the dead whom it has slainH
Lie in the strict embraceG
Of secret weird tendrils but the painH
Of the ocean's strong remorseI
Doth fiercely forceI
The tale of murder from its bosom outJ
In a mighty tempest clangour and its shoutJ
In the threat'ning and lamenting of its swellK
Is as the voice of HellK
Yet all the word it saithL
Is 'Death 'M
-
Come with me sang the WindA
Why art thou love unkindA
Thou are too fair O shipN
To kiss the slimy lipN
Of the cold and dismal shore and prithee markB
How chill and darkB
Shew the vast and rusty linkings of the chainH
Hoarse grating as with painH
Which moors theeL
And secures theeL
From the transports of the soft wind and the mainH
Aye strain thou and pullO
Thy sails are dullP
And dim from long close furling on thy sparsI
But come thou forth with meL
And full and freeL
I'll kiss them kiss them kiss them till they beL
White as the Arctic starsI
Or as the salt white pinions of the gulfQ
-
Come with me sang the WindA
O ship belov'd and findA
How golden gloss'd and blueR
Is the seaL
How thrush sweet is my voice how dearly trueR
I'll keep my nuptial promises to theeL
O mine to guide thy sailsI
By the kisses of my mouthL
Soft as blow the galesI
On the roses in the southL
O mine to guide thee farS
From ruddy coral barS
From horizon to horizon thou shalt glimmer like a starS
Thou shalt lean upon my breastT
And I shall restT
And murmur in thy sailsI
Such fond talesI
That thy finest cordsI
Will syren like chant back my mellow wordsI
With such renew'd enchantment unto meL
That I shall beL
By my own singing closer bound to theeL
-
Come with me sang the WindA
Thou knowest love my mindA
No more I'll try to woo theeL
Persuade thee or pursue theeL
For thou art mineU
Since first thy mast a tall and stately pineU
Beneath Norwegian skiesI
Sang to my sighsI
Thou thou wert built for meL
Strong lily of the seaL
Thou cans't not chooseI
The calling of my low voice to refuseI
And if DeathL
Were the sole sad wailing burthen of my breathL
Thy timbers at my callV
Would shudder in their thrallV
Thy sails outburst to touch my stormy lipN
Like a giant quick in a graveF
Thy anchor heaveW
And close upon my thunder pulsing breast O shipN
Thou would'st tremble nor repineU
That being mineU
Thy sparsI
Like long pale lights of falling starsI
Plunged in the Stygian blackness of the seaI
And to billowy ruin castX
Thy tall and taper mastX
Rushed shrieking headlong down to an abyssI
O ship O love if DeathL
Were such sure portion thou could'st not refuseI
But thou would'st chooseI
As mine to die and call such choosing blissI
For thou for meI
Wert plann'd from all eternityI
