O soft small cloud the dim sweet dawn adorningA
Swan like a sailing on its tender greyB
Why dost thou dost thou floatC
So high the wing'd wild noteC
Of silver lamentation from my dark and pulsing throatC
May never reach theeD
Tho' every note beseech theeD
To bend thy white wings downward thro' the smiling of the morningA
And by the black wires of my prison lightly strayB
-
O dear small cloud when all blue morn is ringingA
With sweet notes piped from other throats than mineE
If those glad singers pleaseF
The tall and nodding treesF
If to them dance the pennants of the swaying columbineE
If to their songs are setG
The dance of daffodil and trembling violetH
Will they pursue theeD
With tireless wings as free and bold as thineE
Will they woo theeD
With love throbs in the music of their singingA
Ah nay fair Cloud ah nayB
Their hearts and wings will stayB
With yellow bud of primrose and soft blush of the MayB
Their songs will thrill and dieI
Tranc'd in the perfume of the rose's breastJ
While I must see thee flyI
With white broad lonely pinions down the skyI
-
O fair small cloud unheeding o'er me strayingA
Jewell'd with topaz light of fading starsK
Thy downy edges redL
As the great eagle of the Dawn sails highI
And sets his fire bright headL
And wind blown pinions towards thy snowy breastJ
And thou canst blush while II
Must pierce myself with song and dieI
On the bald sod behind my prison barsK
Nor feel upon my crestJ
Thy soft sunn'd touches delicately playingA
-
O fair small cloud grown small as lily flow'rM
Even while I smite the bars to see thee fadeN
The wind shall bring theeD
The strain I sing theeD
I in wired prison stay'dN
Worse than the breathless primrose gladeN
That in my mornO
I shrilly sang to scornO
I'll burst my heart up to thee in this hourP
-
O fair small cloud float nearer yet and hear meD
A prison'd lark once lov'd a snowy cloudQ
Nor did the DayB
With sapphire lips and kissR
Of summery blissR
Draw all her soul awayB
Vainly the fervent EastS
Deck'd her with roses for their bridal feastS
She would not restJ
In his red arms but slipp'd adown the airT
And wan and fairT
Her light foot touch'd a purple mountain crestJ
And touching turn'dU
Into swift rain that like to jewels burn'dU
In the great wondering azure of the skyI
And while a rainbow spreadL
Its mighty arms above she singing fledL
To the lone feather'd slaveV
In his sad weird graveV
Whose heart upon his silver song had spedL
To her in days of oldW
In dawns of goldW
And murmuring to him saidL
O love I come O love I come to cheer theeD
Love to be near theeD
