Young Mary stole along the valeA
To keep her tryst with Ulnor's lordB
A warrior clad in coat of mailA
Stood darkling by the brawling fordB
-
O let me pass O let me passC
Dark falls the night on hill and leaD
Flies flies the bright day swift and fastE
From lordly bower and greenwood treeD
The small birds twitter as they flyF
To dewy bough and leaf hid nestG
Dark fold the black clouds on the skyF
And maiden terrors throng my breastG
-
And thou shalt pass thou bonnie maidH
If thou wilt only tell to meD
Why hiest thou forth in lonesome shadeH
Where may thy wish'd for bourne beD
O let me by O let me byF
My granddam dwells by Ulnor's shoreI
She strains for me her failing eyeF
Beside her lowly ivied doorI
-
I rode by Ulnor's shore at dawnJ
I saw no ancient dame and cotK
I saw but startl'd doe and fawnJ
Thy bourne thou yet hast told me notK
O let me pass my father liesL
Long stretch'd in coffin and in shroudM
Where Ulnor's turrets climb the skiesL
Where Ulnor's battlements are proudM
-
I rode by Ulnor's walls at noonN
I heard no bell for passing spriteO
And saw no henchman straik'd for tombP
Thou hast not told thy bourne arightO
O let me pass a monk doth dwellQ
In lowly hut by Ulnor's shrineR
I seek the holy friar's cellQ
That he may shrive this soul of mineR
-
I rode by Ulnor's shrine this dayO
I saw no hut no friar's cowlS
I heard no holy hermit prayO
I heard but hooting of the owlS
O let me pass time flies apaceT
And since thou wilt not let me beD
I tryst with chief of Ulnor's raceT
Beneath the spreading hawthorn treeD
-
I rode beside the bonnie thornU
When this day's sun was sinking lowV
I saw a damsel like the mornU
I saw a knight with hound and bowW
The chief was chief of Ulnor's nameX
The maid was of a high degreeD
I saw him kiss the lovely dameX
I saw him bend the suitor's kneeD
-
I saw the fond glance of his eyeF
To her red cheek red roses bringY
Between them as my steed flew byF
I saw them break a golden ringY
O wouldst thou know thou curious knightO
Where Mary's bourne to night will beD
Since thou has seen such traitor sightO
Beneath the blooming hawthorn treeD
-
Fair shone the yellow of her locksZ
Her cheek and bosom's drifted snowV
She leap'd adown the sharp grey rocksZ
She sought the sullen pool belowV
The knight his iron vizard rais'dO
He caught young Mary to his heartO
She lifted up her head and gaz'dO
She drew her yellow locks apartO
-
-
-
The roses touch'd her lovely faceT
The lilies white did faint and fleeD
The knight was chief of Ulnor's raceT
His only true love still was sheD
