Said the high hill in the morning 'Look on meA
'Behold sweet earth sweet sister sky beholdB
'The red flames on my peaks and how my pinesC
'Are cressets of pure gold my quarried scarsD
'Of black crevase and shadow fill'd canonE
'Are trac'd in silver mist How on my breastF
'Hang the soft purple fringes of the nightG
'Close to my shoulder droops the weary moonH
'Dove pale into the crimson surf the sunE
'Drives up before his prow and blackly standsI
'On my slim loftiest peak an eagle withJ
'His angry eyes set sunward while his cryK
'Falls fiercely back from all my ruddy heightsL
'And his bald eaglets in their bare broad nestF
'Shrill pipe their angry echoes ''Sun ariseM
''And show me that pale dove beside her nestF
''Which I shall strike with piercing beak and tearN
''With iron talons for my hungry young ''O
And that mild dove secure for yet a spaceP
Half waken'd turns her ring'd and glossy neckQ
To watch dawn's ruby pulsing on her breastF
And see the first bright golden motes slip downR
The gnarl'd trunks about her leaf deep nestF
Nor sees nor fears the eagle on the peakS
-
-
-
'Aye lassie sing I'll smoke my pipe the whileT
'And let it be a simple bonnie songU
'Such as an old plain man can gather inV
'His dulling ear and feel it slipping thro'N
'The cold dark stony places of his heart '-
'Yes sing sweet Kate ' said Alfred in her earN
'I often heard you singing in my dreamsW
'When I was far away the winter past '-
So Katie on the moonlit window lean'dX
And in the airy silver of her voiceY
Sang of the tender blue 'Forget me not '-
-
Could every blossom find a voiceY
And sing a strain to meA
I know where I would place my choiceY
Which my delight should beA
I would not choose the lily tallZ
The rose from musky grotX
But I would still my minstrel callZ
The blue 'Forget me not '-
-
And I on mossy bank would lieK
Of brooklet ripp'ling clearN
And she of the sweet azure eyeK
Close at my list'ning earN
Should sing into my soul a strainA2
Might never be forgotX
So rich with joy so rich with painA2
The blue 'Forget me not '-
-
Ah ev'ry blossom hath a taleB2
With silent grace to tellC2
From rose that reddens to the galeB2
To modest heather bellC2
But O the flow'r in ev'ry heartX
That finds a sacred spotX
To bloom with azure leaves apartX
Is the 'Forget me not '-
-
Love plucks it from the mosses greenD2
When parting hours are nighK
And places it loves palms betweenD2
With many an ardent sighK
And bluely up from grassy gravesE2
In some lov'd churchyard spotX
It glances tenderly and wavesE2
The dear 'Forget me not '-
-
And with the faint last cadence stole a glanceF2
At Malcolm's soften'd face a bird soft touchG2
Let flutter on the rugged silver snarlsH2
Of his thick locks and laid her tender lipsI2
A second on the iron of his handX
'And did you ever meet ' he sudden ask'dX
Of Alfred sitting pallid in the shadeX
'Out by yon unco place a lad a ladX
'Nam'd Maxwell Gordon tall and straight and strongU
'About my size I take it when a lad '-
And Katie at the sound of Max's nameJ2
First spoken for such space by Malcolm's lipsI2
Trembl'd and started and let down her browN
Hiding its sudden rose on Malcolm's armK2
'Max Gordon Yes Was he a friend of yours '-
'No friend of mine but of the lassie's hereN
'How comes he on I wager he's a droneL2
'And never will put honey in the hive '-
'No drone ' said Alfred laughing 'when I leftX
'He and his axe were quarr'ling with the woodsM2
'And making forests reel love steels a lover's arm '-
O blush that stole from Katie's swelling heartX
And with its hot rose brought the happy dewX
Into her hidden eyes 'Aye aye is that the way '-
Said Malcolm smiling 'Who may be his love '-
'In that he is a somewhat simple soulN2
'Why I suppose he loves ' he paused and KateX
Look'd up with two 'forget me nots' for eyesM
With eager jewels in their centres setX
Of happy happy tears and Alfred's heartX
Became a closer marble than beforeN
' Why I suppose he loves his lawful wife '-
'His wife his wife ' said Malcolm in a mazeO2
And laid his heavy hand on Katie's headX
'Did you play me false my little lassP2
'Speak and I'll pardon Katie lassie what '-
'He has a wife ' said Alfred 'lithe and bronz'dX
'An Indian woman comelier than her kindX
'And on her knee a child with yellow locksQ2
'And lake like eyes of mystic Indian brownR
'And so you knew him He is doing well '-
'False false ' said Katie lifting up her headX
'O you know not the Max my father means '-
'He came from yonder farm house on the slope '-
'Some other Max we speak not of the same '-
'He has a red mark on his temple set '-
'It matters not 'tis not the Max we know '-
'He wears a turquoise ring slung round his neck '-
'And many wear them they are common stones '-
'His mother's ring her name was Helen Wynde '-
'And there be many Helens who have sons '-
'O Katie credit me it is the man '-
'O not the man Why you have never toldX
'Us of the true soul that the true Max hasR2
'The Max we know has such a soul I know '-
'How know you that my foolish little lass '-
Said Malcolm a storm of anger boundX
Within his heart like Samson with green withsR2
'Belike it is the false young cur we know '-
'No no ' said Katie simply and low voic'dX
'If he were traitor I must needs be falseR2
'For long ago love melted our two heartsR2
'And time has moulded those two hearts in oneE
'And he is true since I am faithful still '-
She rose and parted trembling as she wentX
Feeling the following steel of Alfred's eyesR2
And with the icy hand of scorn'd mistrustX
Searching about the pulses of her heartX
Feeling for Max's image in her breastX
'To night she conquers Doubt to morrow's noonH
'His following soldiers sap the golden wallZ
'And I shall enter and possess the fort '-
Said Alfred in his mind 'O Katie childX
'Wilt thou be Nemesis with yellow hairN
'To rend my breast for I do feel a pulseR2
'Stir when I look into thy pure barb'd eyesR2
'O am I breeding that false thing a heartX
'Making my breast all tender for the fangsR2
'Of sharp Remorse to plunge their hot fire inV
'I am a certain dullard Let me feelS2
'But one faint goad fine as a needle's pointX
'And it shall be the spur in my soul's sideX
'To urge the madd'ning thing across the jagsR2
'And cliffs of life into the soft embraceR2
'Of that cold mistress who is constant tooX
'And never flings her lovers from her armsR2
'Not Death for she is still a fruitful wifeT2
'Her spouse the Dead and their cold marriage yieldsR2
'A million children born of mould'ring fleshU2
'So Death and Flesh live on immortal theyV2
'I mean the blank ey'd queen whose wassail bowlN2
'Is brimm'd from Lethe and whose porch is redX
'With poppies as it waits the panting soulN2
'She she alone is great No scepter'd slaveW2
'Bowing to blind creative giants sheA
'No forces seize her in their strong mad handsR2
'Nor say ''Do this be that '' Were there a GodX
'His only mocker she great NothingnessR2
'And to her close of kin yet lover tooX
'Flies this large nothing that we call the soul '-
-
-
-
'Doth true Love lonely growN
Ah no ah noN
Ah were it only soN
That it alone might showN
Its ruddy rose upon its sapful treeA
Then then in dewy mornX2
Joy might his brow adornX2
With Love's young rose as fair and glad as he '-
-
-
-
But with Love's rose doth blowN
Ah woe ah woeN
Truth with its leaves of snowN
And Pain and Pity growN
With Love's sweet roses on its sapful treeA
Love's rose buds not aloneL2
But still but still doth ownL2
A thousand blossoms cypress hued to seeA
