Rhyme Scheme: ABCB DEDF FGHG IJIJ KLKL MNMN OPOP QRQR STST FUFU GVGV

Long time one whisper'd in his earA
Give me my strong pure soul beholdB
'Tis mine to give what men hold dearC
The treasure of red goldB
-
I bribe thee not with crown and throneD
Pale spectres they of kingly pow'rE
I give thee gold red gold aloneD
Can crown a king each hourF
-
He frown'd perchance he felt a throeF
Gold hunger gnawing at his heartG
A passing pang for stern and lowH
He bade the fiend departG
-
Again there came the voice and saidI
Gold for that soul of thine were shameJ
Thine be that thing for which have bledI
Both Gods and men high FameJ
-
And in long ages yet to sweepK
Their gloom and glory on the dayL
When mould'ring kings forgot shall sleepK
In ashes dust and clayL
-
Thy name shall starlike pulse and burnM
On heights most Godlike and divineN
Immortal bays thy funereal urnM
Shall lastingly entwineN
-
He sigh'd perchance he felt the thrillO
The answ'ring pulse to Fame's high callP
But answer made his steadfast willO
I will not be thy thrallP
-
Again there came the voice and criedQ
Dost thou my kingly bribes disdainR
Yet shalt thou barter soul and prideQ
For things ignobly vainR
-
Two shameless eyes two false sweet eyesS
A sinful brow of sinless whiteT
Shall hurl thy soul from high clear skiesS
To ME and Stygian nightT
-
Beneath the spell of gilded hairF
Thy palms like sickly weeds shall dieU
God strong Resolves a sensuous airF
Shall mock and crucifyU
-
Go to my thrall at last thou artG
Ere bud to rounded blossom changeV
Thou wilt for wanton lips and heartG
Most false thy soul exchangeV
