The storm is in the air she said and heldA
Her soft palm to the breeze and looking upB
Swift sunbeams brush'd the crystal of her eyesC
As swallows leave the skies to skim the brownD
Bright woodland lakes The rain is in the airE
O Prophet Wind what hast thou told the roseF
That suddenly she loosens her red heartG
And sends long perfum'd sighs about the placeH
O Prophet Wind what hast thou told the SwiftI
That from the airy eave she shadow greyJ
Smites the blue pond and speeds her glancing wingK
Close to the daffodils What hast thou told small bellsL
And tender buds that all unlike the roseF
They draw green leaves close close about their breastsM
And shrink to sudden slumber The sycamoresM
In ev'ry leaf are eloquent with theeN
The poplars busy all their silver tonguesM
With answ'ring thee and the round chestnut stirsM
Vastly but softly at thy propheciesM
The vines grow dusky with a deeper greenO
And with their tendrils snatch thy passing harpP
And keep it by brief seconds in their leavesM
O Prophet Wind thou tellest of the rainQ
While jacinth blue the broad sky folds calm palmsM
Unwitting of all storm high o'er the landR
The little grasses and the ruddy heathS
Know of the coming rain but towards the sunT
The eagle lifts his eyes and with his wingsM
Beats on a sunlight that is never marr'dU
By cloud or mist shrieks his fierce joy to airE
Ne'er stir'd by stormy pulseM
The eagle mine I said O I would rideV
His wings like Ganymede nor ever careE
To drop upon the stormy earth againW
But circle star ward narrowing my gyresM
To some great planet of eternal peaceM
Nay said my wise young love the eagle fallsM
Back to his cliff swift as a thunder boltX
For there his mate and naked eaglets dwellY
And there he rends the dove and joys in allZ
The fierce delights of his tempestuous homeA2
And tho' the stormy Earth throbs thro' her polesM
With tempests rocks upon her circling pathB2
And bleak black clouds snatch at her purple hillsM
While mate and eaglets shriek upon the rockC2
The eagle leaves the hylas to its calmD2
Beats the wild storm apart that rings the earthE2
And seeks his eyrie on the wind dash'd cliffF2
O Prophet Wind close close the storm and rainQ
-
Long sway'd the grasses like a rolling waveG2
Above an undertow the mastiff criedV
Low swept the poplars groaning in their heartsM
And iron footed stood the gnarl'd oaksM
And brac'd their woody thews against the stormH2
Lash'd from the pond the iv'ry cygnets soughtI2
The carven steps that plung'd into the poolJ2
The peacocks scream'd and dragg'd forgotten plumesM
On the sheer turf all shadows subtly diedV
In one large shadow sweeping o'er the landR
Bright windows in the ivy blush'd no moreK2
The ripe red walls grew pale the tall vane dimL2
Like a swift off'ring to an angry GodM2
O'erweighted vines shook plum and apricotN2
From trembling trellis and the rose trees pour'dO2
A red libation of sweet ripen'd leavesM
On the trim walks To the high dove cote setP2
A stream of silver wings and violet breastsM
The hawk like storm swooping on their trackQ2
Go said my love the storm would whirl me offR2
As thistle down I'll shelter here but youS2
You love no storms Where thou art I saidT2
Is all the calm I know wert thou enthron'dT2
On the pivot of the winds or in the maelstromU2
Thou holdest in thy hand my palm of peaceM
And like the eagle I would break the beltsM
Of shouting tempests to return to theeN
Were I above the storm on broad wingsM
Yet no she eagle thou a small white lily girlV2
I clasp and lift and carry from the rainQ
Across the windy lawnW2
With this I woveX2
Her floating lace about her floating hairE
And crush'd her snowy raiment to my breastT2
And while she thought of frowns but smil'd insteadT2
And wrote her heart in crimson on her cheeksM
I bounded with her up the breezy slopesM
The storm about us with such airy dinY2
As of a thousand bugles that my heartT2
Took courage in the clamor and I laidT2
My lips upon the flow'r of her pink earZ2
And said I love thee give me love againW
And here she pal'd love has its dread and thenW
She clasp'd its joy and redden'd in its lightT2
Till all the daffodils I trod were paleA3
Beside the small flow'r red upon my breastT2
And ere the dial on the slope was pass'dT2
Between the last loud bugle of the WindT2
And the first silver coinage of the RainQ
Upon my flying hair there came her kissM
Gentle and pure upon my face and thusM
Were we betroth'd between the Wind and RainQ
