A Battle Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis
Rhyme Scheme: ABCDEAFGH IJKLM NOPQAFRSTUV WAXYIZA2SB2C2D2E2F2| SLOWLY the Moon her banderoles of light | A |
| Unfurls upon the sky her fingers drip | B |
| Pale silvery tides her armoured warriors | C |
| Leave Day's bright tents of azure and of gold | D |
| Wherein they hid them and in silence flock | E |
| Upon the solemn battlefield of Night | A |
| To try great issues with the blind old king | F |
| The Titan Darkness who great Pharoah fought | G |
| With groping hands and conquered for a span | H |
| - | |
| The starry hosts with silver lances prick | I |
| The scarlet fringes of the tents of Day | J |
| And turn their crystal shields upon their breasts | K |
| And point their radiant lances and so wait | L |
| The stirring of the giant in his caves | M |
| - | |
| The solitary hills send long sad sighs | N |
| As the blind Titan grasps their locks of pine | O |
| And trembling larch to drag him toward the sky | P |
| That his wild seeking hands may clutch the Moon | Q |
| From her war chariot scythed and wheeled with light | A |
| Crush bright mailed stars and so a sightless king | F |
| Reign in black desolation Low set vales | R |
| Weep under the black hollow of his foot | S |
| While sobs the sea beneath his lashing hair | T |
| Of rolling mists which strong as iron cords | U |
| Twine round tall masts and drag them to the reefs | V |
| - | |
| Swifter rolls up Astarte's light scythed car | W |
| Dense rise the jewelled lances groves of light | A |
| Red flouts Mars' banner in the voiceless war | X |
| The mightiest combat is the tongueless one | Y |
| The silvery dartings of the lances prick | I |
| His fingers from the mountains catch his locks | Z |
| And toss them in black fragments to the winds | A2 |
| Pierce the vast hollow of his misty foot | S |
| Level their diamond tips against his breast | B2 |
| And force him down to lair within his pit | C2 |
| And thro' its chinks thrust down his groping hands | D2 |
| To quicken Hell with horror for the strength | E2 |
| That is not of the Heavens is of Hell | F2 |
