I shed tears for my countryA
Hot lead tearsB
No end in sight not todayC
Not tomorrowD
-
Sad tales like wormsE
Ooze out from rotten woundsF
Which go deepG
Deep deep beyond my forebearsB
-
Dogs set out to hunt gameH
Get eaten by gamesI
And games thrust to dogsJ
End up poisoning the belly of the dogsJ
-
Such is the anthem we eatK
As legacyA
Colonial bequeathed lotL
Land of the slavedL
Home of the cursedL
-
To whom shall I cry toL
And who shall join me inM
This wailing symphonyA
ThatL
Relief however minuteL
However temporalN
Shall roof our filthO
And cleanse the rotsP
-
When gods go crazyA
Who will beckon on themQ
Will youL
Should IR
None will yesS
Not even the beautiful onesT
-
WhyR
Our cries have blinded the godsU
And corrupted the heavenliesU
-
We all are accursed elseU
Libations incense and giftsU
From salvaged fewL
Would have reached the skiesU
-
ButL
Should we begin our country a newL
Should we rebirth to rebuild to renewL
-
By my timeV
It's still long hours till the morning sunW

Poet's note: In this poem, I seem to have lost hope of my country Nigeria. I desire a peaceful and prosperous country for my children and children's children. It is all I want. Time is of essence to begin a new.
