welcome the rainD

in rhythm under the blue skiesF
brisk and swiftG
tender swingsH
in their wingsH
in the windI
chekelekeA
-
my hands meet their swayJ
in compulsionK
a reflex fashioned in conformanceL
reminiscent of infancyM
coated fingers in whitish tattooN
symbolism of innocenceL
or of adored superstitionK
-
I checked out my fingersO
let out a chuckleP
waved to the rainy skyA
went back to Durban GenQ
as daylight fadesR

Poet's note: Growing up as an African kid, myth holds it that Egrets bring good fortune when one is gifted with a whitish mark on the fingers. This happens when one waves at the Egrets, in a flapping of the fingers! This poem is depiction of that childhood fantasy.
