What is in deathA
that it is perennially drunkB
What is in the soilC
that it is insatiableD
Robert has gone visitingE
when will he be backF
-
O mortuary I hail theeG
harbinger of many soulsH
naked they lieI
ritual of passingE
embalment their ointmentJ
perfumery to the beyondK
-
In processionL
relatives and mourners lineM
ntasiobi to EzeaguE
contoured paths to the graveN
today Robert tomorrow whoO
-
What becomes of his young familyG
What is the gain of his strugglesP
Our hustlesP
All but vanityG
-
Here I standQ
on sacred hills of EzeaguE
undulating meeting our painsR
solidarity of tearsS
uniformity of fate that must beG
that must comeT
-
Here we all gatherU
eulogies leaning upon wailingsS
dust and air all quietV
silentJ
in communion with natureU
a call that we must payW
-
Fare thee well KachiX
ancestorU
your new apparelD
loyalty you must adornY
tell them the tales of our sardine escapadesS
tell them our land is in turmoilC
beckon on ancestors to awakenL
to let us be but take our painsS
our land needs healingE
our deaths dignityG

Poet's note: This is a tribute to my Sales Executive, Robert Kachi Chikwendu, who died last week. He died unexpectedly, leaving behind a young wife, little kids and perplexed loved ones and colleagues. May his soul find peace in eternity.
