| The past is made of those first and greatest poets | A |
| So lofty and disdainful of renown | F |
| They left us not a name to know them by | G |

| They were the ones that in whatever tongue | H |
| Worded the world that were the first to say | I |
| Star water stone that said the visible | J |
| And made it bring invisibles to view | K |
| In wind and time and change and in the mind | L |
| Itself that minded the hitherto idiot world | M |
| And spoke the speechless world and sang the towers | N |
| Of the city into the astonished sky | G |

| They were the first great listeners attuned | O |
| To interval relationship and scale | P |
| The first to say above beneath beyond | Q |
| Conjurors with love death sleep with bread and wine | R |
| Who having uttered vanished from the world | M |
| Leaving no memory but the marvelous | B |
| Magical elements the breathing shapes | S |
| And stops of breath we build our Babels of | T |
