The Lobster Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDBBEBB FGHAIJKLAMNOJHP QJRSTUV B

Here at the Super Duper in a glass tankA
Supplied by a rill of cold fresh waterB
Running down a glass washboard at one endC
And siphoned off at the other and soD
Perpetually renewed a herd of lobsterB
Is made available to the customerB
Who may choose whichever one he wantsE
To carry home and drop into boiling waterB
And serve with a sauce of melted butterB
-
Meanwhile the beauty of strangeness marksF
These creatures who move when they doG
With a slow vague wavering of clawsH
The somnambulist s effortless clamberingA
As he crawls over the shell of a dreamI
Resembling himself Their velvet colorsJ
Mud red bruise purple cadaver greenK
Speckled with black their camouflage at homeL
Make them conspicuous here in the strongA
Day imitating light the incommensurableM
Philosophers and at the same time victimsN
Herded together in the marketplace asleepO
Except for certain tentative gesturesJ
Of their antennae or their imperial clawsH
Pegged shut with a whittled stick at the wristP
-
We inlanders buying our needful foodQ
Pause over these slow gigantic spidersJ
That spin not We pause and are bemusedR
And sometimes it happens that a mind sinks downS
To the blind abyss in a swirl of sand goes coldT
And archaic in a carapace of hornU
Thinking There's something underneath the worldV
-
The flame beneath the pot that boils the waterB
