The Icehouse In Summer Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCDE FGHIJKLMIIMNI FICOPIBIQ

A door sunk in a hillside with a boltA
thick as the boy s arm and behind that doorB
the walls of ice melting a blue faint lightC
an air of cedar branches sawdust fernD
decaying seasons keeping from decayE
-
-
A summer guest the boy had never seenF
a servant told him of it how the lakeG
froze three foot thick how farmers came with teamsH
with axe and saw to cut great blocks of iceI
translucid marbled glittering in the sunJ
load them on sleds and drag them up the hillK
to be manhandled down the narrow pathL
and set in courses for the summer s keepingM
the kitchen uses and luxuriousnessI
of the great houses And he heard how onceI
a team and driver drowned in the break of springM
the man s cry melting from the ice that summerN
frightened the sherbet eaters off the terraceI
-
-
Dust of the cedar lost and evergreenF
among the slowly blunting water wallsI
where the blade edge melted and the steel saw s biteC
was rounded out and the horse and rider drownedO
in the red sea s blood I was the silly childP
who dreamed that riderless cry and saw the guestsI
run from a ghostly wall so long beforeB
the winter house fell with the summer houseI
and the houses Egypt the great houses had an endQ
