The Brief Journey West Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCD EFAG HIJK LMGN OGPG DQGG GRSH

By the dry road the fathers cough and spitA
This is their room They are the ones who hungB
That bloody sun upon the southern wallC
And crushed the armored beetle to the floorD
-
The father s skin is seamed and dry the mapE
Of that wild region where they drained the swampF
And set provision out that they might sitA
Of history the cracked precipitateG
-
Until the glass be shattered and the sunH
Descend to burn the prosperous flesh awayI
Of the filthy world so vilely fathered onJ
The fathers such black cinders sitting thereK
-
-
Old pioneers what lecheries remainL
When schoolgirls pass what whispers of their skirtsM
Cold gleams of flesh solicit in your veinedG
And gemlike eyes the custom of desireN
-
-
None now Their eyes are sunk in ancient fleshO
And the sarcastic triumph of the mindG
They now enjoy letting their lust aloneP
Who may have kin but have no longer kindG
-
Neither tomorrow s monstrous tumor norD
The reformation of the past they wishQ
Who hold in silent colloquy the worldG
A shrivelled apple in the hand of GodG
-
They hang at night their somber flags aloftG
And through the amorous dark pursue their themeR
Of common images that sleep may showS
Them done with all disasters but the oneH
