Things That Mortals Eat There. Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCDEEAADD FGHG IJIJEEKK ELEL

And what do you eat in the mess there compoundedA
For roast beef the gravy the soap man should claimB
The soup some odd things might turn up if soundedA
And other made dishes might turn up the sameB
-
Decoctions that puzzle your chemical skillC
You get if you call either coffee or teaD
And milk that is made with and tastes of the swillC
As like milk as wine is that often we seeD
Is like to the juice of the grape in perfectionE
Or like as the candidate after electionE
Is like the fair thing that we hoped or expectedA
Before the base thief was exposed or detectedA
As like truth and virtue and more is the pityD
The men we elected to rule our own cityD
-
In council while sitting though common we call themF
In common opinion if people at largeG
Are's common in morals no worse could befal 'emH
If Satan should take them at once in his chargeG
-
If food as their filth was as plenty for dietI
No lack would they feel of the coveted cashJ
Or power they maintain with the power of a riotI
When heads of opponents are served up as hashJ
By Star chamber cooks of the club restorationE
That rules now the city and would rule the nationE
If Sachems were willing the Wigwam to yieldK
And give the arch traitor a fair fighting fieldK
-
But fighting just now is not our intentionE
But dining with Merdle the banker in stateL
And only these items like side dishes mentionE
While waiting the coming the main dinner plateL
