A Victory a victoryA
Is flashed across the wiresB
Speed speed the news from State to StateC
Light up the signal firesB
Let all the bells from all the towersB
A joyous peal ring outD
We've gained a glorious victoryA
And put the foe to routD
-
A mother heard the chiming bellsE
Her joy was mixed with painF
Pray God she said my gallant boyG
Be not among the slainF
Alas for her that very hourH
Outstretched in death he layI
The color from his fair young faceJ
Had scarcely passed awayI
-
His nerveless hand still grasped the swordK
He never more might wieldL
His eyes were sealed in dreamless sleepM
Upon that bloody fieldL
The chestnut curls his mother oftN
Had stroked in fondest prideO
Neglected hung ia clotted locksP
With deepest crimson dyedO
-
Ah many a mother's heart shall acheQ
And bleed with anguish soreR
When tidings come of him who marchedS
So blithely forth to warR
Oh sad for them the stricken downT
In manhood's early dawnU
And sadder yet for loving heartsV
God comfort them that mournW
-
Yes victory has a fearful priceX
Our hearts may shrink to payI
And tears will mingle with the joyG
That greets a glorious dayI
But he who dies in freedom's causeY
We cannot count him lostZ
A battle won for truth and rightA2
Is worth the blood it costB2
-
O mothers count it something gainedC2
That they for whom you mournW
Bequeath fair Freedom's heritageD2
To millions yet unbornW
And better than a thousand yearsE2
Of base ignoble breathF2
A patriot's fragrant memoryA
A hero's early deathF2
