In the far off Polar seasA
Far beyond the HebridesA
Where the icebergs towering highB
Seem to pierce the wintry skyB
And the fur clad EsquimauxA
Glides in sledges o'er the snowC
Dwells St Nick the merry wightD
Patron saint of Christmas nightD
-
Solid walls of massive iceA
Bearing many a quaint deviceA
Flanked by graceful turrets twainE
Clear as clearest porcelainF
Bearing at a lofty heightD
Christ's pure cross in simple whiteD
Carven with surpassing artG
From an iceberg's crystal heartG
-
Here St Nick in royal stateH
Dwells until December lateH
Clips the days at either endI
And the nights at each extendI
Then with his attendant spritesA
Scours the earth on wintry nightsA
Bringing home in well filled handsA
Children's gifts from many landsA
-
Here are whistles tops and toysA
Meant to gladden little boysA
Skates and sleds that soon will glideJ
O'er the ice or steep hill sideJ
Here are dolls with flaxen curlsA
Sure to charm the little girlsA
Christmas books with pictures gayK
For this welcome holidayK
-
In the court the reindeer waitH
Filled the sledge with costly freightH
As the first faint shadow fallsA
Promptly from his icy hallsA
Steps St Nick and grasps the reinE
And afar in measured timeL
Sounds the sleigh bells' silver chimeL
-
Like an arrow from the bowM
Speed the reindeer o'er the snowC
Onward Now the loaded sleighK
Skirts the shores of Hudson's BayK
Onward till the stunted treeN
Gains a loftier majestyN
And the curling smoke wreaths riseA
Under less inclement skiesA
-
Built upon a hill side steepO
Lies a city wrapt in sleepO
Up and down the lonely streetP
Sleepy watchmen pace their beatP
Little heeds them Santa ClausA
Not for him are human lawsA
With a leap he leaves the groundQ
Scales the chimney at a boundQ
-
Five small stockings hang belowC
Five small stockings in a rowC
From his pocket blithe St NickR
Fills the waiting stockings quickR
Some with sweetmeats some with toysA
Gifts for girls and gifts for boysA
Mounts the chimney like a birdS
And the bells are once more heardS
-
Santa Claus Good Christmas saintT
In whose heart no selfish taintT
-
Findeth place some homes there beN
Where no stockings wait for theeN
Homes where sad young faces wearU
Painful marks of Want and CareU
And the Christmas morning bringsA
No fair hope of better thingsA
-
Can you not some crumbs bestowC
On these Children steeped in woeC
Steal a single look of careU
Which their sad young faces wearU
From your overflowing storeV
Give to them whose hearts are soreV
No sad eyes should greet the mornW
When the infant Christ was bornW
