To Egypt's king who ruled besideA
The reedy river's flowB
Came God's command Release O kingC
And let my people goB
-
The king's proud heart grew hard apaceD
He marked the suppliant throngE
And said Nay they must here abideA
The weak must serve the strongE
-
Straightway the Lord stretched forth his handF
And every stream ran bloodG
The river swept towards the seaH
A full ensanguined floodG
-
The haughty king beheld the landF
By plagues afflicted soreI
But as God's wonders multipliedA
Hardened his heart the moreI
-
Until the angel of the LordJ
Came on the wings of NightK
And smote first born of man and beastL
In his destructive flightK
-
Throughout all Egypt not a houseM
Was spared this crowning woeB
Then broke the tyrant's stubborn willN
He bade the people goB
-
They gathered up their flocks and herdsO
Rejoicing to be freeH
And going forth a mighty hostP
Encamped beside the seaH
-
-
Then Pharaoh's heart repented himQ
He called a mighty forceR
And swiftly followed on their trackS
With chariot and with horseR
-
Then Israel's host were sore afraidT
But God was on their sideA
And lo for them a way is cleftU
The Red sea waves divideA
-
At God's command the restless wavesV
Obey the prophet's rodW
And through the middle of the seaH
The people marched dry shodW
-
But when the spoilers following closeX
Would hinder Israel's flightK
The waters to their course returnY
The parted waves uniteK
-
And Pharaoh's host is swept awayZ
The chariots and the horseR
And not a man is left aliveA2
Of all that mighty forceR
-
So in these days God looks from heavenB2
And marks his servants' woeB
Hear ye his voice Break every yokeC2
And let my people goB
-
For them the Red sea waves divideA
The streams with crimson flowB
Therefore we mourn for our first bornD2
Then let the people goB
-
They are not weak whom God befriendsE2
He makes their cause His ownF2
And they who fight against God's mightK
Shall surely be o'erthrownF2
