Little Charlie Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDAEA FGHGIJKJ LGDGMNON DCPCQNDN JRORFCDC

A violet grew by the river sideA
And gladdened all hearts with its bloomB
While over the fields on the scented airC
It breathed a rich perfumeB
But the clouds grew dark in the angry skyD
And its portals were opened wideA
And the heavy rain beat down the flowerE
That grew by the river sideA
-
Not far away in a pleasant homeF
There lived a little boyG
Whose cheerful face and childish graceH
Filled every heart with joyG
He wandered one day to the river's vergeI
With no one near to saveJ
And the heart that we loved with a boundless loveK
Was stilled in the restless waveJ
-
The sky grew dark to our tearful eyesL
And we bade farewell to joyG
For our hearts were bound by a sorrowful tieD
To the grave of the little boyG
The birds still sing in the leafy treeM
That shadows the open doorN
We heed them not for we think of the voiceO
That we shall hear no moreN
-
We think of him at eventideD
And gaze on his vacant chairC
With a longing heart that will scarce believeP
That Charlie is not thereC
We seem to hear his ringing laughQ
And his bounding step at the doorN
But alas there comes the sorrowful thoughtD
We shall never hear them moreN
-
We shall walk sometimes to his little graveJ
In the pleasant summer hoursR
We will speak his name in a softened voiceO
And cover his grave with flowersR
We will think of him in his heavenly homeF
In his heavenly home so fairC
And we will trust with a hopeful trustD
That we shall meet him thereC
