Dear Charlie breathed a soldierA
O comrade true and triedB
Who in the heat of battleC
Pressed closely to my sideB
I feel that I am strickenD
My life is ebbing fastE
I fain would have you with meF
Dear Charlie till the lastE
-
It seems so sudden CharlieF
To think to morrow's sunD
Will look upon me lifelessG
And I not twenty oneD
I little dreamed this morningH
Twould bring my last campaignI
God's ways are not as our waysJ
And I will not complainI
-
There's one at home dear CharlieF
Will mourn for me when deadK
Whose heart it is a mother'sL
Can scarce be comfortedM
You'll write and tell her CharlieF
With my dear love that IN
Fought bravely as a soldier shouldO
And died as he should dieN
-
And you will tell her CharlieF
She must not grieve too muchP
Our country claims our young livesQ
For she has need of suchP
And where is he would falterA
Or turn ignobly backR
When Duty's voice cries 'Forward '-
And Honor lights the trackR
-
And there's another CharlieF
His voice became more lowS
When thoughts of HER come o'er meF
It makes it hard to goS
This locket in my bosomT
She gave me just beforeU
I left my native villageV
For the fearful scenes of warU
-
Give her this message CharlieF
Sent with my dying breathW
To her and to my bannerA
I'm 'faithful unto death '-
And if in that far countryF
Which I am going toX
Our earthly ties may enterA
I'll there my love renewX
-
Come nearer closer CharlieF
My head I fain would restY
It must be for the last timeZ
Upon your faithful breastY
Dear friend I cannot tell youX
How in my heart I feelA2
The depth of your devotionD
Your friendship strong as steelA2
-
We've watched and camped togetherA
In sunshine and in rainI
We've shared the toils and perilsB2
Of more than one campaignI
And when my tired feet falteredC2
Beneath the noontide heatD2
Your words sustained my courageV
Gave new strength to my feetD2
-
And once 'twas at AntietamZ
Pressed hard by thronging foesE2
I almost sank exhaustedF2
Beneath their cruel blowsE2
When you dear friend undauntedM
With headlong courage threwX
Your heart into the contestY
And safely brought me throughX
-
My words are weak dear CharlieF
My breath is growing scantG2
Your hand upon my heart thereH2
Can you not hear me pantG2
Your thoughts I know will wanderA
Sometimes to where I lieN
How dark it grows True comradeI2
And faithful friend good byN
-
A moment and he lay thereH2
A statue pale and calmZ
His youthful head recliningH
Upon his comrade's armZ
His limbs upon the greenswardI2
Were stretched in careless graceJ2
And by the fitful moon was seenK2
A smile upon his faceJ2
