'Twas on Lake Erie's broad expanseA
One bright midsummer dayB
The gallant steamer Ocean QueenC
Swept proudly on her wayB
Bright faces clustered on the deckD
Or leaning o'er the sideE
Watched carelessly the feathery foamF
That flecked the rippling tideE
-
Ah who beneath that cloudless skyG
That smiling bends sereneC
Could dream that danger awful vastH
Impended o'er the sceneC
Could dream that ere an hour had spedI
That frame of sturdy oakJ
Would sink beneath the lake's blue wavesK
Blackened with fire and smokeJ
-
A seaman sought the captain's sideE
A moment whispered lowL
The captain's swarthy face grew paleM
He hurried down belowL
Alas too late Though quick and sharpN
And clear his orders cameO
No human efforts could availM
To quench the insidious flameO
-
The bad news quickly reached the deckD
It sped from lip to lipP
And ghastly Faces everywhereQ
Looked from the doomed shipP
Is there no hope no chance of lifeR
A hundred lips imploreS
But one the captain made replyG
To run the ship on shoreS
-
A sailor whose heroic soulT
That hour should yet revealU
By name John Maynard eastern bornV
Stood calmly at the wheelU
Head her south east the captain shoutsW
Above the smothered roarS
Head her south east without delayB
Make for the nearest shoreS
-
No terror pales the helmsman's cheekX
Or clouds his dauntless eyeG
As in a sailor's measured toneY
His voice responds Ay ayB
Three hundred souls the steamer's freightZ
Crowd forward wild with fearA2
While at the stern the dreaded flamesB2
Above the deck appearA2
-
John Maynard watched the nearing flamesB2
But still with steady handC2
He grasped the wheel and steadfastlyD2
He steered the ship to landC2
John Maynard can you still hold outE2
He heard the captain cryG
A voice from out the stifling smokeJ
Faintly responds Ay ayB
-
But half a mile a hundred handsF2
Stretch eagerly to shoreS
But half a mile That distance spedI
Peril shall all be o'erG2
But half a mile Yet stay the flamesB2
No longer slowly creepH2
But gather round that helmsman boldI2
With fierce impetuous sweepH2
-
John Maynard with an anxious voiceJ2
The captain cries once moreS
Stand by the wheel five minutes yetK2
And we shall reach the shoreS
Through flame and smoke that dauntless heartL2
Responded firmly stillM2
Unawed though face to face with deathN2
With God's good help I willM2
-
The flames approach with giant stridesO2
They scorch his hand and browP2
One arm disabled seeks his sideE
Ah he is conquered nowP2
But no his teeth are firmly setK2
He crushes down his painQ2
His knee upon the stanchion pressedR2
He guides the ship againS2
-
One moment yet one moment yetK2
Brave heart thy task is o'erG2
The pebbles grate beneath the keelU
The steamer touches shoreS
Three hundred grateful voice riseT2
In praise to God that heD2
Hath saved them from the fearful fireG2
And from the engulphing seaD2
-
But where is he that helmsman boldI2
The captain saw him reelU
His nerveless hands released their taskU2
He sank beside the wheelU
The wave received his lifeless corpseV2
Blackened with smoke and fireG2
God rest him Never hero hadW2
A nobler funeral pyreG2
