My Charlie has gone to the warA
My Charlie so brave and tallB
He left his plough in the furrowC
And flew at his country's callB
May God in safety keep himD
My precious boy my allB
-
My heart is pining to see himD
I miss him every dayE
My heart is weary with waitingF
And sick of the long delayE
But I know his country needs himD
And I could not bid him stayE
-
I remember how his face flushedG
And how his color cameH
When the flash from the guns of SumterI
Lit the whole land with flameH
And darkened our country's bannerI
With the crimson hue of shameH
-
Mother he said then falteredJ
I felt his mute appealK
I paused if you are a motherI
You know what mothers feelK
When called to yield their dear onesL
To the cruel bullet and steelK
-
My heart stood still for a momentM
Struck with a mighty woeC
A faint as of death came o'er meN
I am a mother you knowC
But I sternly checked my weaknessO
And firmly bade him GoC
-
Wherever the fight is fiercestP
I know that my boy will beN
Wherever the need is sorestP
Of the stout arms of the freeN
May he prove as true to his countryN
As he has been true to meN
-
My home is lonely without himD
My hearth bereft of joyQ
The thought of him who has left meN
My constant sad employQ
But God has been good to the motherI
She shall not blush for her boyQ
