A Soldier's Valentine Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCBDEFE FGHGIJKJ LMNMOFEF PLELQRSR TULULLVL

Just from the sentry's trampA
I must take it again at tenB
I have laid my musket downC
And seized instead my penB
For pacing my lonely roundD
In the chilly twilight grayE
The thought dear Mary cameF
That this is St Valentine's DayE
-
And with the thought there cameF
A glimpse of the happy timeG
When a school boy's first attemptH
I sent you in borrowed rhymeG
On a gilt edged sheet embossedI
With many a quaint designJ
And signed in school boy handK
Your loving ValentineJ
-
The years have come and goneL
Have flown I know not whereM
And the school boy's merry faceN
Is grave with manhood's careM
But the heart of the man still beatsO
At the well remembered nameF
And on this St Valentine's DayE
His choice is still the sameF
-
There was a time ah wellP
Think not that I repineL
When I dreamed this happy dayE
Would smile on you as mineL
But I heard my country's callQ
I knew her need was soreR
Thank God no selfish thoughtS
Withheld me from the warR
-
But when the dear old flagT
Shall float in its ancient prideU
When the twain shall be made oneL
And feuds no more divideU
I will lay my musket downL
My martial garb resignL
And turn my joyous feetV
Toward home and ValentineL
