O be swiftA
we have always known you wanted usB
-
We fled inland with our flocksC
we pastured them in hollowsD
cut off from the windE
and the salt track of the marshF
-
We worshipped inlandG
we stepped past wood flowersH
we forgot your tangI
we brushed wood grassJ
-
We wandered from pine hillsK
through oak and scrub oak tanglesL
we broke hyssop and brambleM
we caught flower and new bramble fruitN
in our hair we laughedO
as each branch whipped backP
we tore our feet in half buried rocksC
and knotted roots and acorn cupsQ
-
We forgot we worshippedR
we parted green from greenS
we sought further thicketsT
we dipped our anklesL
through leaf mould and earthU
and wood and wood bank enchanted usB
-
and the feel of the clefts in the barkV
and the slope between tree and treeW
and a slender path strung field to fieldX
and wood to woodY
and hill to hillZ
and the forest after itA2
-
We forgot for a momentB2
tree resin tree barkV
sweat of a torn branchC2
were sweet to tasteD2
-
We were enchanted with the fieldsE2
the tufts of coarse grassJ
in the shorter grassJ
we loved all thisF2
-
But now our boat climbs hesitates dropsG2
climbs hesitates crawls backP
climbs hesitatesH2
O be swiftA
we have always known you wanted usB
