I thought this Pen would arise	A
From the casket where it lies	A
Of itself would arise and write	B
My thanks and my surprise	A

When you gave it me under the pines	C
I dreamed these gems from the mines	C
Of Siberia Ceylon and Maine	D
Would glimmer as thoughts in the lines	C

That this iron link from the chain	D
Of Bonnivard might retain	D
Some verse of the Poet who sang	E
Of the prisoner and his pain	D

That this wood from the frigate's mast	F
Might write me a rhyme at last	F
As it used to write on the sky	G
The song of the sea and the blast	F
	-
But motionless as I wait	H
Like a Bishop lying in state	H
Lies the Pen with its mitre of gold	I
And its jewels inviolate	J
	-
Then must I speak and say	K
That the light of that summer day	K
In the garden under the pines	C
Shall not fade and pass away	K
	-
I shall see you standing there	L
Caressed by the fragrant air	L
With the shadow on your face	M
And the sunshine on your hair	L
	-
I shall hear the sweet low tone	N
Of a voice before unknown	N
Saying 'This is from me to you	O
From me and to you alone '	-

And in words not idle and vain	D
I shall answer and thank you again	P
For the gift and the grace of the gift	Q
O beautiful Helen of Maine	D

And forever this gift will be	R
As a blessing from you to me	R
