The Venetian Gondolier Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEF GHGH IJIJ KLKL MBMJ

Here rest the weary oar soft airsA
Breathe out in the o'erarching skyB
And Night sweet Night serenely wearsA
A smile of peace her noon is nighB
-
Where the tall fir in quiet standsC
And waves embracing the chaste shoresD
Move o'er sea shells and bright sandsC
Is heard the sound of dipping oarsD
-
Swift o'er the wave the light bark springsE
Love's midnight hour draws lingering nearF
And list his tuneful viol stringsE
The young Venetian GondolierF
-
Lo on the silver mirrored deepG
On earth and her embosomed lakesH
And where the silent rivers sweepG
From the thin cloud fair moonlight breaksH
-
Soft music breathes around and diesI
On the calm bosom of the seaJ
Whilst in her cell the novice sighsI
Her vespers to her rosaryJ
-
At their dim altars bow fair formsK
In tender charity for thoseL
That helpless left to life's rude stormsK
Have never found this calm reposeL
-
The bell swings to its midnight chimeM
Relieved against the deep blue skyB
Haste dip the oar again 'tis timeM
To seek Genevra's balconyJ
