At anchor in Hampton Roads we layA
On board of the Cumberland sloop of warB
And at times from the fortress across the bayA
The alarum of drums swept pastC
Or a bugle blastC
From the camp on the shoreB
-
Then far away to the south uproseD
A little feather of snow white smokeE
And we knew that the iron ship of our foesD
Was steadily steering its courseD
To try the forceD
Of our ribs of oakE
-
Down upon us heavily runsD
Silent and sullen the floating fortF
Then comes a puff of smoke from her gunsD
And leaps the terrible deathG
With fiery breathG
From each open portF
-
We are not idle but send her straightH
Defiance back in a full broadsideI
As hail rebounds from a roof of slateH
Rebounds our heavier hailJ
From each iron scaleJ
Of the monster's hideI
-
Strike your flag the rebel criesD
In his arrogant old plantation strainK
Never our gallant Morris repliesD
It is better to sink than to yieldL
And the whole air pealedL
With the cheers of our menM
-
Then like a kraken huge and blackN
She crushed our ribs in her iron graspO
Down went the Cumberland all a wrackN
With a sudden shudder of deathG
And the cannon's breathG
For her dying gaspO
-
Next morn as the sun rose over the bayA
Still floated our flag at the mainmast headL
Lord how beautiful was Thy dayA
Every waft of the airP
Was a whisper of prayerP
Or a dirge for the deadL
-
Ho brave hearts that went down in the seasD
Ye are at peace in the troubled streamQ
Ho brave land with hearts like theseD
Thy flag that is rent in twainK
Shall be one againM
And without a seamQ
