With what a glory comes and goes the yearA
The buds of spring those beautiful harbingersB
Of sunny skies and cloudless times enjoyC
Life's newness and earth's garniture spread outD
And when the silver habit of the cloudsE
Comes down upon the autumn sun and withF
A sober gladness the old year takes upG
His bright inheritance of golden fruitsH
A pomp and pageant fill the splendid sceneI
-
There is a beautiful spirit breathing nowJ
Its mellow richness on the clustered treesK
And from a beaker full of richest dyesL
Pouring new glory on the autumn woodsM
And dipping in warm light the pillared cloudsE
Morn on the mountain like a summer birdN
Lifts up her purple wing and in the valesO
The gentle wind a sweet and passionate wooerA
Kisses the blushing leaf and stirs up lifeP
Within the solemn woods of ash deep crimsonedN
And silver beech and maple yellow leavedN
Where Autumn like a faint old man sits downQ
By the wayside a weary Through the treesK
The golden robin moves The purple finchR
That on wild cherry and red cedar feedsS
A winter bird comes with its plaintive whistleT
And pecks by the witch hazel whilst aloudN
From cottage roofs the warbling blue bird singsU
And merrily with oft repeated strokeV
Sounds from the threshing floor the busy flailW
-
O what a glory doth this world put onX
For him who with a fervent heart goes forthY
Under the bright and glorious sky and looksZ
On duties well performed and days well spentN
For him the wind ay and the yellow leavesA2
Shall have a voice and give him eloquent teachingsU
He shall so hear the solemn hymn that DeathB2
Has lifted up for all that he shall goC2
To his long resting place without a tearA
