The Retreat Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABCCDDEECCFGADDDHHII JJKKIIDDELMM

Happy those early days when IA
Shin'd in my Angel infancyB
Before I understood this placeC
Appointed for my second raceC
Or taught my soul to fancy aughtD
But a white celestial thoughtD
When yet I had not walk'd aboveE
A mile or two from my first LoveE
And looking back at that short spaceC
Could see a glimpse of His bright faceC
When on some gilded cloud or flow'rF
My gazing soul would dwell an hourG
And in those weaker glories spyA
Some shadows of eternityD
Before I taught my tongue to woundD
My Conscience with a sinful soundD
Or had the black art to dispenseH
A several sin to ev'ry senseH
But felt through all this fleshly dressI
Bright shoots of everlastingnessI
-
O how I long to travel backJ
And tread again that ancient trackJ
That I might once more reach that plainK
Where first I left my glorious trainK
From whence th' enlightned spirit seesI
That shady City of Palm treesI
But ah my soul with too much stayD
Is drunk and staggers in the wayD
Some men a forward motion loveE
But I by backward steps would moveL
And when this dust falls to the urnM
In that state I came returnM
