The Nativity Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABBCCDD CCEECCFFCCGHBBAIJJKK LL MMNNCCDDOO

Peace and to all the world sure OneA
And He the Prince of Peace hath noneA
He travels to be born and thenB
Is born to travel more againB
Poor Galilee thou canst not beC
The place for His nativityC
His restless mother's called awayD
And not delivered till she payD
-
A tax 'tis so still we can seeC
The church thrive in her miseryC
And like her Head at Bethlem riseE
When she oppressed with troubles liesE
Rise should all fall we cannot beC
In more extremities than HeC
Great Type of passions come what willF
Thy grief exceeds all copies stillF
Thou cam'st from heaven to earth that weC
Might go from earth to heaven with TheeC
And though Thou foundest no welcome hereG
Thou didst provide us mansions thereH
A stable was Thy court and whenB
Men turned to beasts beasts would be menB
They were Thy courtiers others noneA
And their poor manger was Thy throneI
No swaddling silks Thy limbs did foldJ
Though Thou couldst turn Thy rays to goldJ
No rockers waited on Thy birthK
No cradles stirred nor songs of mirthK
But her chaste lap and sacred breastL
Which lodged Thee first did give Thee restL
-
But stay what light is that doth streamM
And drop here in a gilded beamM
It is Thy star runs page and bringsN
Thy tributary Eastern kingsN
Lord grant some light to us that weC
May with them find the way to TheeC
Behold what mists eclipse the dayD
How dark it is shed down one rayD
To guide us out of this sad nightO
And say once more Let there be lightO
