The Book Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: AABB CDEEFF BBGG HHGGIIJKLL EEEMNN

Eternal God Maker of allA
That have lived here since the man's fallA
The Rock of Ages in whose shadeB
They live unseen when here they fadeB
-
Thou knew'st this paper when it wasC
Mere seed and after that but grassD
Before 'twas dressed or spun and whenE
Made linen who did wear it thenE
What were their lives their thoughts and deedsF
Whether good corn or fruitless weedsF
-
Thou knew'st this tree when a green shadeB
Covered it since a cover madeB
And where it flourished grew and spreadG
As if it never should be deadG
-
Thou knew'st this harmless beast when heH
Did live and feed by Thy decreeH
On each green thing then slept well fedG
Clothed with this skin which now lies spreadG
A covering o'er this aged bookI
Which makes me wisely weep and lookI
On my own dust mere dust it isJ
But not so dry and clean as thisK
Thou knew'st and saw'st them all and thoughL
Now scattered thus dost know them soL
-
O knowing glorious Spirit whenE
Thou shalt restore trees beasts and menE
When Thou shalt make all new againE
Destroying only death and painM
Give him amongst Thy works a placeN
Who in them loved and sought Thy faceN
