Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCDEFEFGHGHIJIK ILILMNMNOPOLQRSTUTUSure it was so Man in those early days | A |
Was not all stone and earth | B |
He shined a little and by those weak rays | A |
Had some glimpse of his birth | B |
He saw Heaven o'er his head and knew from whence | C |
He came condemned hither | D |
And as first love draws strongest so from hence | C |
His mind sure progressed thither | D |
Things here were strange unto him sweat and till | E |
All was a thorn or weed | F |
Nor did those last but like himself died still | E |
As soon as they did seed | F |
They seemed to quarrel with him for that act | G |
That felled him foiled them all | H |
He drew the curse upon the world and cracked | G |
The whole frame with his fall | H |
This made him long for home as loth to stay | I |
With murmurers and foes | J |
He sighed for Eden and would often say | I |
'Ah what bright days were those ' | K |
Nor was Heaven cold unto him for each day | I |
The valley or the mountain | L |
Afforded visits and still paradise lay | I |
In some green shade or fountain | L |
Angels lay lieger here each bush and cell | M |
Each oak and highway knew them | N |
Walk but the fields or sit down at some well | M |
And he was sure to view them | N |
Almighty Love where art Thou now Mad man | O |
Sits down and freezeth on | P |
HE raves and swears to stir nor fire nor fan | O |
But bids the thread be spun | L |
I see Thy curtains are close drawn Thy bow | Q |
Sin triumphs still and man is sunk below | R |
The center and his shroud | S |
All's in deep sleep and night thick darkness lies | T |
And hatcheth o'er Thy people | U |
But hark what trumpet's that what angel cries | T |
'Arise thrust in Thy sickle' | U |
