Rhyme Scheme: ABABCDCD BEBEFAFA GHGHIJIJAwake upon a couch of pain | A |
I see a star betwixt the trees | B |
Across yon darkening field of cane | A |
Comes slow and soft the evening breeze | B |
My curtain's folds are faintly stirred | C |
And moving lightly in her rest | D |
I hear the chirrup of a bird | C |
That dreameth in some neighboring nest | D |
- | |
Last night I took no note of these | B |
How it was passed I scarce can say | E |
'T was not in prayers to Heaven for ease | B |
'T was not in wishes for the day | E |
Impatient tears and passionate sighs | F |
Touched as with fire the pulse of pain | A |
I cursed and cursed the wildering eyes | F |
That burned this fever in my brain | A |
- | |
Oh blessings on the quiet hour | G |
My thoughts in calmer current flow | H |
She is not conscious of her power | G |
And hath no knowledge of my woe | H |
Perhaps if like yon peaceful star | I |
She looked upon my burning brow | J |
She would not pity from afar | I |
But kiss me as the breeze does now | J |
