Shall I desist twice baffled Once by landA
And once by sea I fought and strove with stormsB
All shades of danger tides and weary calmsC
Head currents cold and famine savage beastsD
And men more savage all the while my faceE
Looked northward toward the pole if mortal strengthF
Could have sustained me I had never turnedG
Till I had seen the star which never setsH
Freeze in the Arctic zenith That I failedI
To solve the mysteries of the ice bound worldJ
Was not because I faltered in the questK
Witness those pathless forests which concealL
The bones of perished comrades that long marchM
Blood tracked o'er flint and snow and one dread nightN
By Athabasca when a cherished lifeO
Flowed to give life to others This and worseP
I suffered let it pass it has not tamedQ
My spirit nor the faith which was my strengthF
Despite of waning years despite the worldJ
Which doubts the few who dare I purpose nowR
A purpose long and thoughtfully resolvedS
Through all its grounds of reasonable hopeT
To seek beyond the ice which guards the PoleU
A sea of open water for I holdV
Not without proofs that such a sea existsW
And may be reached though since this earth was madeX
No keel hath ploughed it and to mortal earY
No wind hath told its secrets With this tideZ
I sail if all be well this very moonA2
Shall see my ship beyond the southern capeB2
Of Greenland and far up the bay through whichC2
With diamond spire and gorgeous pinnacleD2
The fleets of winter pass to warmer seasE2
Whether my hardy shipmates we shall reachF2
Our bourne and come with tales of wonder backG2
Or whether we shall lose the precious timeH2
Locked in thick ice or whether some strange fateI2
Shall end us all I know not but I knowJ2
A lofty hope if earnestly pursuedK2
Is its own crown and never in this lifeO
Is labor wholly fruitless In this faithL2
I shall not count the chances sure that allM2
A prudent foresight asks we shall not wantN2
And all that bold and patient hearts can doO2
Ye will not leave undone The rest is God'sP2
