Retirement Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

My gentle friend I hold no creed so falseA
As that which dares to teach that we are bornB
For battle only and that in this lifeC
The soul if it would burn with starlike powerD
Must needs forsooth be kindled by the sparksE
Struck from the shock of clashing human heartsF
There is a wisdom that grows up in strifeC
And one I like it best that sits at homeG
And learns its lessons of a thoughtful easeH
So come a lonely house awaits thee thereI
Nor praise nor blame shall reach us save what loveJ
Of knowledge for itself shall wake at timesK
In our own bosoms come and we will buildL
A wall of quiet thought and gentle booksM
Betwixt us and the hard and bitter worldN
Sometimes for we need not be anchoritesM
A distant friend shall cheer us through the PostO
Or some Gazette of course no partisanP
Shall bring us pleasant news of pleasant thingsM
Then twisted into graceful allumettesM
Each ancient joke shall blaze with genuine flameQ
To light our pipes and candles but to warsM
Whether of words or weapons we shall beR
Deaf so we twain shall pass away the timeS
Ev'n as a pair of happy lovers whoT
Alone within some quiet garden nookU
With a clear night of stars above their headsM
Just hear betwixt their kisses and their talkV
The tumult of a tempest rolling throughT
A chain of neighboring mountains they awhileW
Pause to admire a flash that only showsM
The smile upon their faces but full soonX
Turn with a quick glad impulse and perhapsM
A conscious wile that brings them closer yetY
To dally with their own fond hearts and playZ
With the sweet flowers that blossom at their feetA2
