Hymn - Consecration Of Magnolia Cemetery Poem Rhyme Scheme and Analysis

Rhyme Scheme: ABAB CDCD EFEG HIHI

Whose was the hand that painted thee O DeathA
In the false aspect of a ruthless foeB
Despair and sorrow waiting on thy breathA
O gentle Power who could have wronged thee soB
-
Thou rather shouldst be crowned with fadeless flowersC
Of lasting fragrance and celestial hueD
Or be thy couch amid funereal bowersC
But let the stars and sunlight sparkle throughD
-
So with these thoughts before us we have fixedE
And beautified O Death thy mansion hereF
Where gloom and gladness grave and garden mixedE
Make it a place to love and not to fearG
-
Heaven shed thy most propitious dews aroundH
Ye holy stars look down with tender eyesI
And gild and guard and consecrate the groundH
Where we may rest and whence we pray to riseI
